Get ready to cheer on Charlie Bucket and learn some lessons along the way as students at Vail Mountain School presents “Willy Wonka” this weekend. “Willy Wonka is a magical, whimsical musical that speaks to audiences of all ages. Beneath its colorful sets, catchy songs and fantastical characters lies a timeless message: always do the right thing, tell the truth and stay true to who you are,” said Christi Howell, theatre director at Vail Mountain School. “In a world that often feels fast paced and uncertain, these core values resonate more than ever.”

Auditions were held in October and rehearsals began in November. 38 middle school students, eight lower school students and four upper school students are a part of this production. Learning to work together, support one another and bring a story to life reminds the students and faculty at Vail Mountain School that some of the most powerful learning happens when the lines are blurred between grades, and everyone simply comes together as a community.

“I have enjoyed the community and friendships that I have made,” said Aidan Bonta, an eighth grader who plays the role of Willy Wonka. “Willy Wonka is a fun character to play, I think Willy and I would be friends. I’ve had a lot of fun and can’t wait for the performances.”

“I’m so happy to be able to become closer to people who also share a passion for theater,” said eighth grader Bella Gill, who plays Charlie Bucket.

“This cross-age collaboration is more than just a shared performance—it’s a reflection of who we are. Our younger students benefit from the guidance and mentorship of their older peers, while our middle schoolers grow in confidence and compassion as leaders and role models. Whether it’s in rehearsals, backstage or under the spotlight, these students are building lasting bonds and strengthening our culture of connection across divisions,” Howell said.
