The State Summer Games for Special Olympics Colorado are soon approaching, and the torch is still making its way around the state and local law enforcement agencies will be leading the charge this Saturday. The annual Law Enforcement Torch Run is coming to Freedom Park in Edwards. Run, walk, stroll, skip, bike, scooter along to help raise funds for the 28,000 Special Olympics athletes throughout Colorado. This event has a twist — it’s a color run, so expect to get blasted by bursts of color along the route.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with a group photo at 10:15 a.m. before everyone takes on the course of their choice at 10:30 a.m. There’s a 1-mile route around the lake at Freedom Park and a longer, 2.3-mile version that goes around Freedom Park. Stick around for pizza, ice cream, drinks and more after the Torch Run wraps up.

In addition to supporting and celebrating the Special Olympics athletes, this event also celebrates the work that law enforcement does each year to ensure that these events happen in communities across the state. Three officers in particular, Lisa Vasquez with the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, Craig Westering with the Eagle Police Department and Al Zepeda of the Avon Police Department, were honored in January in front of police agencies from across the state at an event hosted at Ball Arena in Denver. Vasquez has seen many of these Special Olympics athletes grow up since she has been involved in the Special Olympics for 26 years.

“Behind every great community event is a team of dedicated individuals who go above and beyond — not just in their daily service but in bringing people together for a greater cause,” said Eagle County Sheriff James van Beek. “These professionals protect our neighborhoods, respond to citizens’ needs and play a vital role in rallying support for Special Olympics Colorado athletes. Their commitment has driven this event’s growth, expanded opportunities and strengthened fundraising for Special Olympics Colorado.”
